Navigating the Spectrum Community Autism Resources and Educational Services
Navigating the Spectrum is pleased to announce the launch of our Community Autism Resources and Educational Services. NTS CARES® provides high-quality and comprehensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training programs at no cost to the participants. These programs are open to families with children on the autism spectrum, and to teachers and therapists who provide services to children with autism and related developmental disorders.
Decades of research unfailingly prove time and again that ABA is the most comprehensive and effective approach to improving the lives of children with autism and their families. Of course, provider competence is key to a successful behavioral intervention. Unfortunately, there are no requirements that special educators and therapists providing services to children with autism be certified, educated or even trained in ABA, and many providers are “practicing” behavioral therapy without any real ability or experience.
Equally problematic is the lack of readily available and affordable programs for families that provide training in the principles and practical application of ABA. Consequently, very few parents are taught necessary skills that could optimize their child’s development, or even are given sufficient information about behavioral interventions that would enable them to make informed decisions about the capabilities of their child’s providers and therapeutic and educational services. Tragically, countless children with autism fail to benefit from essential behavioral interventions that could make all the difference in their lives. NTS CARES® is proud to help make that difference by offering the following free high-quality and comprehensive ABA programs:
Family Training: A total of twenty-two hours of intensive Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior training consisting of a two-day workshop with on-site childcare, plus multiple one-to-one practical application training sessions where participants can practice the skills taught with their child in the home environment. The training will focus on advancing communication skills and reducing problematic behaviors.
Teacher and Therapist Training: A two-day comprehensive, hands-on workshop where participants become familiar with the principles of behavior and proficient in the application of best practice ABA and VB techniques. The workshop consists of lectures, video and live demonstrations, and opportunities to practice the skills taught. Emphasis will be given to teaching communication skills in both the natural environment and more structured learning environments.
Reducing Problem Behavior: A one-day intensive workshop on how to use ABA to reduce problematic and inappropriate behaviors. Participants will learn how to conduct a functional behavior assessment, how to create effective behavior intervention plans, and how to implement specific programs that address common problem behaviors of children with autism.
Program Development and Implementation: A two-day comprehensive workshop on how to develop and implement programs for children on the autism spectrum utilizing the principles of ABA. The workshop contains a model curriculum advising participants “what to teach” and “how to teach it”, with emphasis on assessing a child’s current level of functioning, identifying appropriate intervention goals, and learning specific programs, teaching protocols and implementation techniques to achieve those goals.
Individual Consultation and Assessment: A total of eight hours of individualized ABA training, focusing on general behavioral principles as well as child-specific concerns. Participants will receive a private consultation during which time the child will be given a skills and language assessment. An individualized treatment plan with specific teaching procedures will be created based upon the assessment. Participants will have opportunities to practice applying the procedures with their child in the home environment.
Each one of our ABA Programs is committed to enabling parents and providers to release the boundless potential of children with autism. Potential to achieve greater independence. Potential to communicate and to share. Potential to meaningfully participate in social relationships. Potential to reach a new goal, to embrace a new experience. Potential to play, to learn, to think, to grow. Allow us to extend our commitment to enhancing every child’s potential to the children in your life.
