ART THERAPY
Art Therapy can be an effective intervention for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by children with autism can be addressed by tailoring art therapy treatment to their individual needs. Through the process of creating art, children have the opportunity to explore and utilize art materials so that they have an avenue through which to express themselves visually. By incorporating sensory focused activities into creating art, issues pertaining to tactile defensiveness can be addressed, enabling children to learn about and relate more meaningfully to their environment.
Displaying samples of artwork to demonstrate themes, techniques, and materials has been beneficial in helping children work toward treatment goals in the areas of social, communication, and sensory development.
